Measure from jamb to jamb, measuring from left to right to get the width. To get three measurements of width, measure from the top, middle, and bottom jambs. Measure from the head to the window sill on either side and the middle.

Measure the height of windows with no headers. If there is no trim around the window sill, you can measure the drywall to the drywall.
For windows with sliding shutters, measure the middle point where the two sashes meet in the center of the window.
After measuring six windows, note the shortest height or width. This is not the middle measurement. You can’t see and measure the entire window frame so it is best to order replacement windows.

Remember the measurements for width and height when measuring to replace a window. Measure the depth from all four sides. Use the smallest measurement possible and don’t subtract anything. Local window shops and home improvement stores may not have many sizes of windows available when it comes time to order. You will most likely need to wait several weeks before a manufacturer makes your windows.

Windows that won’t properly open, close, or lock correctly
    Drafty Windows
    Low energy efficiency
Water damage, mold and rot caused by leaks and replacement windows cracks
    Window condensation
    Safety concerns
Professional window measurements are free. It is a part of the no-cost consultation. You can measure your windows by yourself, but professional measurements are recommended to ensure a perfect fit.

A consultation at home would be even better. Talking to someone in a showroom is one thing. It’s quite another to show them your home and talk about your options, room by room and window after window.

    Style of the window
Direction and placement of the window
The window is in the room
    Window problems or difficulties
A window expert can provide more than just a quotation for your replacement project. They will make recommendations about the right windows for you based on your style and performance requirements.

Remember that you can always replace your existing window with a new style when ordering a window. Double-hung windows are better for ventilation. A picture window is a better choice if you need more ventilation but less view. You can personalize the window to fit your home. You should also consider the energy-efficient glass options and any upgrades to your glass package. Your wallet will be grateful for you.

Get familiar with the anatomy of windows so you can measure from the correct places. Your new window will not be large if you measure to the jambs or the interior trim of your sill. If you go too far beyond the jambs, sill or head, your next window won’t fit into the existing opening.

Replacement Window Measurements: What You Need to Know
The first step of the replacement process is to get a rough idea of the size of each window. To assist in getting an estimation, take note of the window’s height and width.

A consultation will allow a window expert to inspect your window and determine the performance issues that you are concerned about. This can help you make informed decisions regarding replacements. You can also see the effects of different elements on your interior design and how they look in your home. They’ll also measure your windows again.

Window Measurement: Why You Should Hire a Professional
Before any major home improvement project can begin, it is necessary to measure the countertops, cabinets and decks. Measure twice. You only need to cut once. Contractors and professionals want to make sure you are satisfied with the final result.
